“Accreditation is the reaffirmation of God's calling for UUC to be a Christian educational institution committed to overcoming language, mobility, and financial barriers to prepare students to serve God effectively in their locations and vocations. Accreditation objectively affirms the quality of UUC's education and it also binds us to keep improving ourselves.” This was the response of Dr. Son Xuan Nguyen, UUC founder and Executive Vice President, upon hearing the news on March 1 that UUC has been granted full accreditation by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). DEAC is the leading accrediting body in the US for distance learning institutions. deac.org Receiving accreditation is the culmination of over three years of intensive work, yet built upon UUC’s 30 year history of training pastors and lay leaders around the world. In the United States, accreditation is the primary way that students, families, the public, and government officials know that an institution provides a quality education. Accreditors, such as the DEAC, are private, non-governmental organizations created for the purpose of establishing standards of accreditation and reviewing institutions and programs against these standards. Standards are established in areas of academic quality, curriculum requirements, faculty, student services, ethical business practice, academic support services, learning and research resources, administrative capacity and financial capacity. Jim Downey, VP for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Pittsburgh Seminary and Board Chair for UUC noted Achieving DEAC accreditation is an important step toward the future of UUC. Being an accredited institution reinforces the quality of UUC’s programs and provides a stamp of approval that says the mission of UUC is recognized and respected. Being accredited opens the door to a UUC education in new and exciting ways for those who are seeking to learn and grow in their ministry leadership. But the students God has entrusted to us have always been at the heart of UUC. Dr. Dale Sewall, UUC President, commented that as the church around the globe faces challenges in an increasingly more hostile and violent world, “accreditation by the DEAC is an assurance to all of our students that our faculty and staff work hard to support to their success. “ We invite you to rejoice with us in this significant milestone in UUC’s history. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and keep up to date with students, faculty and alumni of UUC.
